I have supervised countless employees over the years and I have noticed a general tendency for them to dread Mondays. There have been many, many Mondays when I arrive at the office, only to be greeted with yawns, hung over expressions, and other indications that the employees’ weekend was short lived. I constantly remind my employees, as well as anyone else who is in hearing range, that Monday is my favorite day of the week. When they get over the shock from hearing this unexpected news, I explain that, as the owner of a small business that is 100% dependent on me to bring in enough revenue to keep all of us employed, when Monday comes around, I am delighted to be in business for one more week! On Mondays, I have everything to look forward to in the upcoming work week: maybe we will be retained for our biggest case ever, maybe a client will pay us a much deserved compliment, and most important, maybe I will be able to help someone who truly needs my help, in ways that will make a positive difference in this person’s life. For me, Mondays represent a clean start, a fresh slate, and a world of limitless possibilities. By Friday, I am tired and hoping for a fun and restful weekend, but on Monday, the sky is the limit for what I might be able to achieve!
It would be interesting to poll other entrepreneurs and business owners to find out if Monday is their favorite day too; I suspect it would be so. I agree with Melissa, if one owns a business, one had better be recharged after a weekend and ready to go at it again. The challenges of small business ownership are such that the owner/leader has to take charge and press everyone on what needs to be done. And that means jump starting the process every Monday to see what goals and objectives can be accomplished that week. Employees should keep this in mind if they want to succeed and instead of acting fatigued from the weekend, they should seize the opportunity to join the boss in looking for new achievements. It is a drag on everyone if an employee is not of this mindset. Saturday may be the reward for working hard, but the excitement of having opportunities ahead make Monday a day to anticipate.
