Some people rarely get inspired. These people are difficult to impress, they often go through life with a “so what?” attitude, and they are not going to be people with whom I am comfortable. I receive inspiration from many things. I thrive on diversity, in people, experiences, and places, and I am constantly amazed by seemingly everyday things. I am inspired by the beautiful orchids my spouse/business partner and I have collected over the years; their flowers are unbelievable! I am inspired by rock and roll music; song lyrics have been an inspiration for many ideas that later turn into these posts. I am inspired by people who overcome tremendous adversity, forgiving their oppressors, and living life to its fullest (Nelson Mandela is a prime example of someone who has inspired me). I am inspired by buildings, particularly the vast canyons in Manhattan. I am inspired by the oceans and the Gulf of Mexico; the waves just keep on rolling. I could go on and on. David’s grandmother, who lived to be almost 100 years young, used to sing an old hymn: “Count Your Blessings.” I count mine, daily, and without this positive outlook on life, I would lack the many inspirations that keep me going. Be inspired, by something, anything, just be inspired!

The world around us, both natural and human made, is an inspiring place. And there are different parts of that world which touch most of us. For me, I find inspiring subjects most often through a lens (usually a Canon). Photography has helped me focus (pun intended) on the beauty of nature. And, I’ve focused on human made beauty in architectural and travel subjects. Of course, the beauty of people is also inspirational – I will never forget showing my photo portfolio to someone once and she said you don’t have any beautiful faces in it (it was a modeling agency). Fortunately, I had a friend who was Miss Florida and this gap was quickly corrected! Beyond photography though, being in places and experiencing things, like when boating on still water, or attending an amazing concert (RUSH comes to mind), the experiences are both in the moment, but can be beyond that if one is open to take that experience further to see or hear something more. As with Melissa, lyrics have long inspired me and I prefer music with lyrics that make me think (even to the point of opening a dictionary to look up new words). Being a part of a beautiful sunrise or sunset, or in the still and quiet of the Everglades, inspires differently, but deeply. Seeing something, or rather focusing on microcosmic environments, as I did recently photographing a colony of fiddler crabs, makes me realize how many things go on around us and are there to be seen if one merely takes the time. Rushing through life without taking time to look at the world around us makes one less well rounded. Being inspired is about being more than 1 dimensional.
