One of the most important parts of working with one’s spouse is taking time out for FUN. FUN is capitalized here to emphasize its critical role in the work/personal time balance. Real, honest to goodness FUN means doing something, with or without your spouse/business partner that provides an intensely enjoyable, unforgettable, experience. (It is important to note that doing something FUN should include enjoyable activities that one can participate in with one’s spouse, as well as activities that are enjoyable on a personal, individual basis. After all, there can be too much of a good thing, even when the good thing is one’s spouse!) Having FUN does not always involve an out of town trip, something that costs money, or something that requires a lot of planning. And, of course, FUN means different things to different people.  The main thing is to not work all the time, to not think about work all the time, and to take some time to do whatever provides a break from stressors. Have FUN!

It may seem strange to have to budget time for fun, but it is important. Whatever the fun is, it can clear the mind of distractions and help one regain focus on less fun things. And, fun as a reward for hard work is important too – there has to be a point of working hard. So, we look for fun, to mix in with other work we’re doing, especially when traveling. And, we find ways to allocate time to some sort of fun to enjoy together or alone. Some of these activities have changed over time, like when Melissa started playing the bass guitar over a decade ago. Others are activities rekindled like me getting to take time to shoot some clay pigeons or take wildlife photos. Explore things you’ve always wanted to do – there is no time like the present.
