Woke up, fell out of bed

Found my way downstairs and drank a cup…and so it goes in the daily life of many people. (Hopefully, the readers of this blog know the source for these famous lyrics.) For Melissa and me, there is no downstairs and we don’t drink cups of coffee, but there is some routine to our mornings. One of those routines is talking about work, including what’s on the agenda today, what needs to be done for the next case, and much more. I suspect other small business owners, especially “mom & pop” operations, start the day this way. Melissa wakes faster than I do and sometimes, she’s talking about work before I’m ready. But, the interesting thing to me is that we are talking work through breakfast, getting showered and dressed, and throughout the first hours of the day. When we can, we take a walk, and talk about work. By the time we get to the office at 9:00, 9:30, or 10:00, we’ve been working for hours. This helps get the plan for the day underway – often including emails to staff, clients, and others well before we leave home. The time when we arrive at the office is inconsequential in some ways, given both the fact that we are working, and the fact we are fully available by phone, email, or text. Work does not start on our arrival to the office – it just continues!
Even though I am certain everyone who reads David’s and my posts know the lyrics David quoted at the beginning of today’s post were written by Paul McCartney (and credited to John Lennon and Paul McCartney) on the song titled, “A Day in the Life,” I am compelled to give credit where credit is due. That being said, David mentions a unique aspect of working with one’s spouse. This unique situation is that we are never, ever, truly “off work.” We recently went on the “vacation of a lifetime,” but we were in contact with our office every day while we were on vacation. And, as David mentions, we always (I do mean always, not often or sometimes) begin each day with discussions about work. Sometimes, these discussions are about issues that need to be handled outside the presence of our employees. Usually, however, we discuss mundane issues such as clients’ cases, travel schedules, and whether the cat sitter has been asked to care for the cat on our next work journey. And, as David points out, from the minute I wake up, I am ready to go! I look forward to starting every new day, with Monday, as everyone who knows me is aware, being my favorite day of the week. I love my job, I enjoy working with Magnus’ clients, and most of all, I love working with David, who shares my work and life philosophy. I may not be sitting at my desk early in the morning or until late at night, but chances are, I’m working or thinking about working. Now, let’s get to work!
