About this blog

After more than 25 years operating a trial consulting practice together as co-founding partners of Magnus Research Consultants, Inc. and Magnus Graphics, Inc., and more than 30 years of marriage, Dr. Melissa Pigott and David Fauss decided to share some of their thoughts, experiences, pet peeves, and perspectives on operating a small “mom & pop” business. The intended audience for their writings is other business owners, as well as employees of small businesses. Trial consulting is a professional service business, as was David’s photography business. There are many unique issues faced by professional service providers; Melissa and David share some of their insights on running a successful business.

Are our Posts Negative? It is a matter of perspective.

Someone mentioned to me recently that, based on reading our posts, it seems like Melissa and I have had lots of negative experiences. My friend mentioned this out of a concern that it might reflect poorly on us that we have these difficulties. I see her point, but, in discussions with other small business owners, […]

No one has ever accused me of being a Pollyanna. (For those readers who don’t know the meaning of this expression, it means someone who thinks good things will always happen and finds something good in all experiences. It originated in 1913, in a novel of the same name by Eleanor Porter.) I believe some […]

Roger & Gizmo’s passing

I have no explanation for why some things work out the way they do. I am a scientist, a person who thrives on cold, hard data and facts. But, there are some things that cannot be explained by data and facts. As readers of these posts know, I love cats, a lot. I have had […]

As of this writing, just a few weeks after Gizmo’s untimely death, Melissa and I are still very sad. We adopted him, after getting his full approval, from the Humane Society, under very unusual circumstances.  We saw his photo in the newspaper as “cat of the week” and were drawn to him. We were not, […]

Changed Litigation Mindsets

Melissa and I have been working with trial lawyers and litigators for 25+ years conducting mock trials and more on high stakes litigation. We have recently been reflecting on some of the changes we have observed and how significant, but perhaps subtle, some of them are in terms of their lasting impact. Certainly ADR, in […]

There are as many reasons to retain the services of organizations like Magnus as there are attorneys who litigate cases. However, all too often, consultants who assist attorneys with the human dynamics of litigation are “pigeon holed” due to erroneous perceptions about what we do. It has always been the case, since I began working […]

Mom’s 100th Birthday & Roger

I am fortunate to have many dear friends whom I have known since childhood. The longest term friendship I have dates from the nursery at my church, where I met Linda when we were 2 years old. We have remained friends since then. I have several friends dating back to kindergarten and many more from […]

I don’t know if it is an alignment of the stars, or what, but the fact that the events happened in the way Melissa described made the reunion with Roger even more meaningful. We all deal with issues in our lives and when they are enough to send friends on different paths, it sometimes seems […]

Be nice to the Assistants and Associates

When we work with a trial team our client is the lead attorney. Though we own the company, we know the lead attorney is our boss, at least as far as that case is concerned. And, that boss is almost always the boss of many other people. Some trial teams have lots of lawyers, paralegals, […]

I have never understood why some people have only enough niceness and courtesy to bestow on the people at “the top,” leaving none for the rest of those with whom they interact.  It is not the case, in my opinion, that there is a finite quantity of pleasant emotions, such that they have to be […]

If you look weird, we’ll think you are weird

Anyone who has read David’s and my posts knows I am a psychologist and a musician. These two avocations, alone or in combination, tend to create an open minded acceptance of other people, including those often described as “weird.” This being said, although I am more tolerant of weird people than almost anyone I know, […]

Given that I worked as a photographer for several years, I’ve seen some creative people who like to express themselves for art’s sake.  And, when it is for art’s sake, perhaps that is fine.  My photography clients were, however, mostly corporate clients and while I had longer than average hair then (and more of it […]

Traveling for Work does not mean Fun & Games

Any reader who travels extensively as part of work can skip this post because you know the realities. We travel to trial venues for mock jury research and the reality is that traveling for work is work in itself. Over the years I have had friends whose jobs do not involve travel say our job […]

I can’t begin to count the number of times that, upon returning home from a business trip, I have sung (loudly): “Gee, but it’s great to be back home.   Home is where I want to be.   I’ve been on the road so long my friend. And if you came along I know you […]

The boss doesn’t want to see your: tattoos

A Point of View

Tattoos are not for everyone and not for every workplace. Just as I am fond of piercings, I am fond of tattoos. But, similar to piercings, I am not fond of tattoos in a professional office environment such as the company I co-own. My fondness for tattoos probably stems from growing up in Southwest Florida, […]

As with the piercing issue, we had the foresight to address tattoos in our earliest policy manual.  Thus, we had the ability to address this issue with new hires, or prospective employees, from the beginning.  And, as with several of these issues, it was not the case that we were “old farts” or “uncool” about […]

I heard the statement which is the title of this post many years ago when one of “Fran’s friends” visited Jacksonville University as part of Dr. Fran Kinne’s efforts to broaden the horizons of JU students. Dr. Kinne was, at the time, the President of JU and her Rolodex (for those too young to remember, […]

“I’m bored” is something I learned, from an early age, never to say to my mother.  If I made the mistake of whining or whimpering something approaching “I’m bored,” Mom would assign one or more tasks to me, most of which were undesirable, to occupy my time.  Having grown up mostly alone, due to my […]

Some people tell me I am stuck in the 1970s, or “old school,” or “retro.” I thank these people for recognizing this characteristic. I may be retro, but I am up to date on the latest fashions even though I choose not to partake in many of them. One of these fashions is multiple piercings, […]

Piercings.  Again, not something I gave much consideration to other than when purchasing some earrings for Melissa with some regularity.  However, this was one detail that we did cover in our original policy manual; the issue was on our radar in 1993 at the beginning of Magnus.  What was, perhaps, not on the radar was […]

Komunitas menghargai kecepatan menemukan jawaban.
