Ziplocks

I don’t know how we survived without ziplock bags (generically speaking, though I know it is a brand name, but Ziplocs or Glad, or whatever).  It seems strange writing about them in this blog, but my partner’s and my goal was to write about things related to our small business(es).  And, ziplocks have been a part of my businesses, including Magnus and in my days as a photographer as the owner of PhotoWorks.  As a photographer, one of the main uses I had for ziplocks was to carry my film through airport security.  One bag had exposed, and another, unexposed film.  And, then, as now, they are so useful for organizing cables, wires, batteries, and accessories.  In our trial consulting world we travel with a considerable amount of A/V equipment including video cameras, monitors, microphones, stands, and all the wires to make them work.  Organizing these pieces of our puzzle into labeled ziplocks or other containers makes it easy to find what we need and separates items which might look similar but which are to be used for different devices.  And, it helps to re-pack the gear post research to ensure the items can be found the next time they are needed.  It is strange how something as simple and basic as plastic bags have a part in sophisticated work, but they do, because they simplify at least one portion of our life and every bit of simplification helps!

As odd as it may seem to be writing in praise of lowly plastic zippered bags, this handy invention has been a tremendous help to me, in many ways. I use plastic zippered bags to contain all of my toiletries inside my suitcase. I double bag the toiletries to prevent the inevitable leaks from permeating the inside of my suitcase. I regularly bring extra ziplock bags to store baked goods or other leftover food items in my hotel room. I use extra large ziplock bags to store gear related to my bass guitar, for easy access at gigs. In the event someone needs an ice pack to ease pain from an injury, I use a ziplock bag to contain the ice, so that it doesn’t leak when it begins to melt. One of the best uses of ziplock bags, as far as I am concerned, is to store freshly bought shrimp (or fish) until it can be taken home to cook. David and I often plan on eating leftovers. When doing so, we take a cooler with us to where we are eating lunch or dinner and inside it, we place ziplocks full of ice, as well as several empty ones, to accommodate the food until we get home. When we travel outside the USA, I am always prepared with “a ziplock from America” in the event we need one, for any reason, during the trip. We often take conveniences for granted, but this post reminds us to be grateful for someone else’s inventiveness.
